In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King's most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade - but escalating - battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott's lawn. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis. Scott doesn't want to be poked and prodded. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. There are a couple of other odd things, too. ![]() The Synopsis: Although Scott Carey doesn't look any different, he's been steadily losing weight. The Publisher: Scribner First Edition edition (Oct. ![]() ![]() There's a bit of mystery thrown in so it's not just all about how Lex spent her summer as a Grim, and of course, there's a little romance as well. The Nutshell: If you're a fan of dark humor you'll probably really enjoy Croak. It was unique and, though morbid at times, enjoyable to read about. ![]() I really liked all the eccentricities that made up croak and working in the death business. ![]() Even touching the book gave me the willies after reading that part! Maybe I just admire the way they were able to put up with Lex's crappy attitude :PĪnd let me just warn all you spider-haters out there (myself included) there is one chapter that will have you wanting to run in your room, stuff all the cracks and crevices, and hide under your covers. Lex was good and all, but I really like Uncle Mort, Driggs, and the rest of the lot. I find these types of characters to usually only be okay, but everyone really grew on me as I read, especially the side characters. If you're not a fan of sardonic characters then you should probably resolve to never read Croak since it's chock-full of them. This book is definitely an acquired taste. I just thought the story would end up being about Lex's adventures as a Grim over the summer but it ended up being a lot more exciting than that. At first everything seemed really predictable. ![]() Croak started off pretty slow, but I found myself really enjoying it by then end. ![]() ![]() ![]() The message is one of being loved and included no matter the size of your family or who is part of it. ![]() The verse then goes on to show other objects and items that are that number but still a solid unit, like a bunch of bananas or a flock of birds. ![]() Each verse looks at a larger family but begins with "One is." and then the number of people in that family. Shannon writes a great little poem that carries this book forward at a brisk and jaunty pace. This picture book will have every child seeing themselves on the page and able to relate, which is definitely something to be celebrated! The book celebrates diversity in families as well with people of different ethnic backgrounds and gay parents. The book is a cheery mix of counting book and family size, moving from one person happily sharing her book with her cat to a very large family of ten with grandparents mixed in. A joyous look at how different families can be and how very happy people can be in small and large families. ![]() ![]() ![]() The fourth story, “The Traitor,” runs parallel with the events of Divergent, giving readers a glimpse into the decisions of loyalty – and love – that Tobias makes in the weeks after he meets Tris Prior. But, unfortunately, it will be one they will not forget. However, it is a summer unlike any of the townsfolk have experienced. This town is not unlike most others, where the neighbors are a close-knit bunch, the kind privy to a bit of everyone's business. In the novel's opening, King draws the reader a picture, a portrait of a small suburban town. But the beauty of these two novels rests in their comparative aspects and the nuanced differences in plot. For example, it is noted that the same characters carry the action in both Desperation and The Regulators. And there are some similarities between the works. Interestingly the setting is said to be in a universe parallel to another of his 1996 works entitled Desperation. ![]() While King tends to set most of his works in the New England state of Maine, The Regulators is set in a small town in Ohio. ![]() ![]() While his contemporary rising stars such as Jim Starlin and John Byrne were developing styles of their own that echoed the esoteric, anti-nostalgic tenor of mid-'70s pop culture through the lens of hyper-realistic predecessors such as Neal Adams and Jim Steranko, Pérez rolled the clock back just slightly. Immediately, Pérez's art stood out from his peers. After a short run on Marvel's Deadly Hands of Kung Fu title in which he co-created White Tiger (his first of many superhero costume designs, which we'll get into later), he quickly graduated to Marvel's then-flagship title The Avengers, solidifying his place as one of the publisher's early rising stars. ![]() George Pérez first hit the comic scene in 1974 at the ripe old age of 20, with artistic sensibilities far beyond his years. ![]() |
